Nigerian singer Skales has recently addressed his strained relationship with fellow artist Wizkid, shedding light on their past and the social media spat that erupted between them. The two musicians, who were once label mates at Empire Mates Entertainment (EME)—Banky W’s prominent record label—have experienced a rocky relationship.
Skales joined EME in 2010 but left in 2014 after his four-year contract ended. Wizkid, on the other hand, exited the label in 2014 after a successful five-year stint. The split was followed by a heated exchange of insults on social media in 2015, which saw both artists hurling insults and making allegations at each other.
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Skales expressed frustration over people who turn their backs after achieving fame. “You know how many people I’ve given a platform, and when they made it, they switched on me? But I’m still here, still being blessed by God … I’m unstoppable,” he wrote. “I am from Kaduna with Edo in my blood … I am Martina’s son.”
The post sparked a range of responses, including one from a user who accused Skales of betraying Wizkid by aligning with his perceived enemies. “You switched on Wiz too, became friends with his enemies to spite him… Forever an underdog, Werey,” the user wrote.
Skales responded, clarifying that he never harbored ill feelings towards Wizkid and that their relationship was merely professional. “I never switched on him … he doesn’t like me … we were never close friends either but EME members … so rest,” he wrote.
He continued, “I have never hated anyone, not even your fav fam. I believe success is the best revenge, even if it takes me 20 years. Working on myself and becoming the best version of me is more important. So, rest.”
Skales further explained that he only addresses the topic when others bring it up and that he has no desire for Wizkid’s approval. “Na una dey bring him matter come anytime I dey yarn my own, so I’ve gotta clear all the lies. I no want make him like me either,” he said.
Despite their past conflicts, He had previously named Wizkid among the Nigerian artists who have inspired him, highlighting the complexity of their relationship and the evolution of their careers.
