Motorists reported being caught up in long tailbacks on the M55 and M6 at Preston which lasted until the early hours of Sunday (6 October) morning.

There were seven miles of congestion with delays of up to an hour on the M55 between Junction 3 (Kirkham) and where it joins the M6 at Junction 32 and the Broughton interchange.

National Highways North West said there were no reported crashes on the route and the congestion was due to high traffic levels.

Many of the drivers caught up in the congestion were returning from the World Fireworks Championships at Blackpool.

Delays began around 11.30pm on Saturday 5 October and lasted through until around 1am.

Many motorists reported it take nearly two hours to return to areas of Preston from Blackpool due to the congestion.

Others reported there has been a crash close to the Broughton roundabout which had caused congestion problems.
