Rapidly rising river levels on the River Ribble have triggered a flood alert for the section from Samlesbury through to Walton-le-Dale.

The flood alert area also includes the stretch of the River Darwen through to where it joins the Ribble at Preston.

An alert from the Environment Agency, their lowest flood warning level, said rising river levels through to 1.30am when they are expected to peak are being monitored: “Rising river levels overnight may lead to flooding.

“Weather conditions are expected to improve tomorrow morning and no further flooding is expected.

“Please do not drive through floodwater as bow waves may affect adjacent properties.”

Earlier on Wednesday (16 October) a flood warning, the second highest alert, was issued for parts of Ribchester due to the River Ribble running high. It remains in force.

Flood warnings have also now been issued for the River Wyre at St Michaels on the Wyre as well as a section of the River Wyre at Kirkland Bridge near to Catterall. There’s also a flood warning in place for the River Wyre in the centre of Garstang in the area known as Bonds.

A flood alert, the lower level warning, is in place for the Upper River Wyre at Brock and the River Lostock and River Yarrow at Whittle-le-Woods and Chorley.

The Met Office extended its warning of heavy rain for Preston and the surrounding area through to midnight on Wednesday – adding an extra 12-hours of heavy rain.
