The announcement, coinciding with similar closures by competitor Costco, means that shoppers should brace themselves and stock up well in advance to avoid any last-minute scrambles.

While the news may come as a surprise to some, it reflects a growing trend among retailers opting to give employees time off for Thanksgiving later this month.

Many major stores, including Target, Walmart, and Aldi, will also be closed on the same day, leaving limited options for those who forget a key ingredient or find themselves needing an emergency grocery run.

Hosting a holiday feast can be a meticulous balancing act, requiring planning and more than a little flexibility.

Despite the best intentions,  countless home chefs realize on the day of the event that they’re missing an essential ingredient—be it a crucial spice, a stick of butter, or the extra whipping cream needed for a dessert.

But with so many major retailers closing their doors for the holiday, procrastinators will need to rethink their backup plans.

While BJ’s Wholesale Club and Costco are leading the pack of closures, other major chains—including Home Depot, Michaels, Kohl’s, and Best Buy—will also shutter their doors.

Grocery staples like Trader Joe’s, Publix, and Aldi will remain closed, further limiting options for last-minute shoppers.

These are all the stores closed on Thanksgiving:

  • A.C. Moore

As Thanksgiving approaches, it’s worth noting that major retailers’ closures reflect a commitment to giving their employees time to spend with loved ones.

While it may create some inconvenience for shoppers, BJ’s Wholesale Club and Costco join a growing list of brands prioritizing family and rest during the holiday season.

So, before the clock runs out, take stock of your needs and make that shopping trip count.

Because come Thanksgiving Day, finding that forgotten stick of butter might require a bit more effort—and a little extra creativity.

What can shoppers do instead?

Thankfully, not all hope is lost for those who find themselves in a pinch.

Select retailers and convenience stores will remain open to cater to holiday needs.

Stores like Kroger, Whole Foods, and select gas station chains will offer limited hours for quick purchases.

Coffee shops and casual dining spots like Dunkin’ may also provide a much-needed respite for holiday hosts.

Here are some of the grocery stores that will be open on Thanksgiving:

  • Acme Markets: Open from 7am to 4pm, though hours may vary by location.
  • Albertsons: Select stores will operate from 6am to at least 3pm.
  • C-Town Supermarkets: Open from 7am to 4pm, depending on location.
  • Kroger: Open but with reduced hours.
  • Food Lion: Many locations will be open, but some may close early.
  • Whole Foods Market: Open with modified hours.

For those who plan to take advantage of Thanksgiving morning to finish up their preparations, several other retailers and grocery chains will also have their doors open:

• H-E-B: Open from 6 a.m. to noon, although pharmacies will be closed.
• Ralphs: Typically open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
• Stop & Shop: Stores in Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey will operate until 3 p.m., but locations in Massachusetts and Rhode Island will remain closed.
