UBISOFT recently announced that it is shutting down one of its biggest releases of the year and refunding players for their purchases.

XDefiant is a free-to-play shooter that Ubisoft launched in May, but it has already been removed from stores, and the in-game store has been disabled.

Ubisoft announced in a blog post: “We regret to inform you that we are initiating the sunset process starting today, December 3rd, 2024.

“As a result, new downloads, player registrations and purchases will no longer be available. Season 3 will still launch, so stay tuned for more updates to come.

“The servers will remain active, and the game will be fully playable until June 3rd, 2025.”

Those who entered the game before December 3, will be able to play all the way until June.

However, if you’ve never played, even if you’ve already downloaded the game, you will not be able to join.

It’s not all doom and gloom for XDefiant players as most of them can get their money back, including what they’ve spent on in-game purchases.

Purchases of XCoins in bundles between 500 and 12k coins made after November 3 will be refunded directly to your payment method by the end of January.

Some other additional content will also be refunded, including any XDefiant Gold Packs, Starter Pack DLC, and Combat Pack DLC purchased after the same date.

Any XCoins or DLC purchased before November 3, will be ineligible for a refund, and that money will be gone for good after the game shuts down.

Only some of those who purchased Founder’s Packs near the game’s launch will get their money back.

Players who purchased the Ultimate Founder’s Pack will receive a full refund, but Founder’s Pack and Founder’s Pack Elite players won’t get their money back.

Exit Defiant

The story of XDefiant is unfortunately an increasingly common one in the industry with live-service games launching and then disappearing just as quickly.

We’ve seen numerous games launch, and then servers are shut down within the year before they have the chance to gain popularity.

Unfortunately, XDefiant isn’t even the worst example of this in 2024, as PlayStation’s Concord broke records by launching and shuttering in the span of two weeks.
