The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has advocated for the removal of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) from the envelope budgetary regime to enable more accurate funding projections and improve the operational efficiency of the Force.
According to a press statement issued on Thursday by the NPF’s Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP made the appeal during the presentation of the NPF’s 2025 budget to the Joint Committees on Police Affairs and Police Institutions at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Thursday.
He was accompanied by senior officers, including the Force Management Team, as well as key stakeholders such as Senator Abdulhamid Mallam Maidori (Chairman, Senate Committee on Police Affairs), Honourable Makki Yalleman (Chairman, House Committee on Police Affairs), and Senator Ibrahim Gaidam (Minister of Police Affairs).
Highlighting the challenges faced by the Force, the IGP called for the establishment of a Special Operations Account to address national security emergencies effectively. He also advocated for increased allocations for Overhead and Capital Expenditure, which he described as essential for maintaining the Force’s operational readiness.
The IGP proposed the construction of five new zonal headquarters and additional support for tactical units critical to internal security. He further emphasised the need for dedicated budget lines for police training institutions to strengthen capacity-building efforts.
Dr Egbetokun stressed that the prompt and full release of appropriated funds in 2025 would be critical to the smooth functioning of the Force, enabling it to meet its responsibilities effectively.
The IGP expressed gratitude to the Joint Committees for their support and engagement during the budget presentation, reaffirming the NPF’s commitment to working collaboratively to reposition the Force in alignment with the vision of a secure and stable Nigeria.
