A community is aiming to show its respects to a Ribchester Rovers Football Club legend who died aged 38.

Peter Hargreaves sadly passed away before Christmas and the football is urging people to line the streets of his home village of Ribchester ahead of his funeral this Sunday (19 January).

Peter’s funeral cortege will leave Ribchester park – known as The Rec and home to Ribchester Rovers – this Sunday, January 19, at noon. The cortege will turn left past the village shop, before turning right at the Black Bull and then left onto Stoneygate Lane. It will then take the journey up to Hidden Oaks, which is further up Stoneygate, where his funeral will take place at 12.30pm.

In a statement the club said: “To give Peter the Ribchester Rovers send off he truly deserves we would politely request that we line the streets with as many current and former Ribchester Rovers players, supporters and volunteers to applaud him out of the village on his final journey.

“The club will never be the same without Pete, but it’s very important his legacy lives on.”

Peter was a leading figure at the football club and was a key player behind the scenes, spending hours of his time doing essential jobs in order for the club to function properly.

He was a well known and much loved figure in the local community and contributed to a range of events such as Ribchester Field Day or the football club’s Rock on the Rec fundraiser. He was also a popular and talented darter for Ribchester Club in the Longridge and District Dominoes League over many years.

The football club added: “Pete was the kindest, big hearted gentleman you could ever meet. His character touched everyone he met. We all have empty hearts right now. Thank you for everything big man. We will miss you so much and never forget you.”

Peter was born with Goldenhar Syndrome, which is an umbrella term for a wide range of bone abnormalities affecting the face and sometimes the vertebrae. If you would like to donate to Goldenhar UK or Ribchester Rovers in Peter’s memory, you can do so by clicking here.
