Sales of Teslas have plummeted across Europe, as car buyers turn on Elon Musk.

In Germany, new Tesla passenger car registrations dropped nearly 60 per cent year-on-year.

New data showed Tesla accounted for just 0.6 per cent of the market in Germany, Schmidt Automatic Research reported.

The auto research group suggested in a statement that "consumers in the market for an EV may well be reacting to Musk's comments where he hosted the leader of the AFD party to a live webcast".

The AFD is a far-right political party in Germany.

Tesla sales have been on a sharp decline in Germany over the past two years, going from close to 9000 sales in March 2023 to just 1277 last month.

The drop is even sharper in France, which recorded a 63 per cent drop in Tesla sales last month, compared to the previous January.

In Sweden, sales were down 44 per cent.

Tesla sales fell 38 per cent in Norway and 42 per cent in the Netherlands.

The drop was less muted in the UK, where Teslas fell eight per cent.

The fall for Tesla comes as electric car sales rise in Europe.

Musk has been vocal in his support for far right-wing parties in Germany and the UK, and scathing in his criticisms of the governments there.

Worth an estimated $670 billion, Musk has heavily involved himself in the Trump White House, after spending hundreds of millions to get the president elected.

At a Trump rally on inauguration day, Musk twice made a stiff-armed gesture that his defenders insisted was not a Nazi salute.

Appointed a "special government employee", Musk has swung the axe through a series of federal agencies in the last two weeks.

Earlier this week Musk and his task force gained access to the database of the Department of the Treasury, which issues pension payments.

Democratic Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley lashed out at Musk.

"He's a Nazi nepo baby who breaks everything he touches," she said.

"And right now he's locked himself in a room with grandpa's Social Security cheque."

A new poll released by The Economist and YouGov today showed only 13 per cent of surveyed Americans want Musk to have a lot of influence in the Trump administration.
