More than 150 million birds have been culled since the H5N1 strain hit American shores in 2022.

Demand for eggs appears to be outweighing supply, currently, prompting retail bosses to impose limits.

Costco and Sam’s Club are among the wholesalers that have introduced policies limiting shoppers to a specific number of crates.

But grocery stores like Whole Foods Market and Aldi have all followed suit.

An Aldi shopper in Lynn Haven, Florida, shared a photo of a refrigerator, which had a note informing customers of a 2-item limit, according to an X thread.

“Due to recent market conditions, egg prices have increased,” a message said.

“We apologize for any inconvenience.”

Shoppers in Ohio revealed a policy of two crates of eggs per customer had been put in place at their local Aldi stores.

And, a customer in New Jersey revealed restrictions had been rolled out.

The average price of a carton of 12 grade A eggs now stands at $4.95, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

And, in January 2000, the average price stood at just 97 cents.

Trader Joe’s is no exception when it comes to rolling out restrictions limiting purchases, but the money-saving expert The Krazy Koupon Lady revealed the price of a crate at her local store in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is $3.49.

Trader Joe’s has limited the number of egg crate purchases to one per shopper.

Walmart has not yet rolled out nationwide restrictions, neither has Target.
