Pope Francis, currently hospitalised with double pneumonia, had a “tranquil” night and was able to rest, the Vatican confirmed on Sunday. The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted in Rome’s Gemelli hospital on 14 February after experiencing breathing difficulties over several days, leading to a diagnosis of pneumonia in both lungs.
For the first time, the Vatican described the pope’s condition as critical on Saturday, revealing that he had required supplemental oxygen and blood transfusions. The infection, classified as “complex,” is being caused by two or more microorganisms, raising concerns among his medical team.
Double pneumonia is a severe infection that inflames and scars both lungs, making breathing difficult. Pope Francis, who has led the Catholic Church since 2013, has faced multiple health challenges in recent years. His vulnerability to lung infections stems from a bout of pleurisy in his youth, which led to the partial removal of one lung.
On Saturday evening, the Vatican disclosed that Francis had suffered a “prolonged asthma-like respiratory crisis,” necessitating the administration of high-flow oxygen. Additionally, blood transfusions were required due to a low platelet count, a condition linked to anaemia. Platelets are crucial for blood clotting, and their deficiency can lead to excessive bleeding.
Medical experts at the Gemelli hospital have warned of potential complications due to the pope’s age and frailty. Dr. Sergio Alfieri, a senior physician at the facility, highlighted the risk of the infection spreading to the bloodstream, which could lead to sepsis—a life-threatening condition that may be difficult to overcome.
As the pope continues to receive intensive medical care, the Vatican remains vigilant about his health. His global followers await further updates, hoping for his swift recovery.
