Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has commended the Ekiti Council of Elders for their efforts in preserving and promoting Yoruba cultural values through the publication of a new book, Yoruba Renaissance: Challenges and Prospects, which highlights the Omoluabi ethos.
The governor made the remarks on Thursday during the presentation of the book, written by Sir Lawrence Egunjobi, at a meeting held at the Conference Hall, Governor’s Office, Ado-Ekiti.
Describing the elders as a pillar of strength and guidance for his administration, Governor Oyebanji praised them for their contributions to governance through their frequent position papers on security, education, and government policies. He emphasised that their insights provide alternative views that help shape policies in the best interest of the people.
Reaffirming his dedication to selfless governance, the governor noted that he cannot afford to let down the people who entrusted him with leadership. He attributed his administration’s achievements to divine wisdom, stating that every decision taken is aimed at delivering shared prosperity, regardless of religious or political affiliations.
Oyebanji said, “I have listened to and read the address of the President, and I don’t think that I have a choice other than to serve Ekiti people because I can’t be raised by a team of people like you and not do well and I am always conscious of the fact that if I do otherwise, it is going to bring disgrace to a lot of people, especially you my parents, my children, my wife and a lot of people that are so dear to me so every time I pray to God for wisdom to always do the right thing.
“And I must thank the Council of Elders for your frequent position papers on government policies, you have written to me on security, on education and I can say you are one of the few in the state that has provided an alternative views on government policies and that speaks to the position of elders in the society”.
Governor Oyebanji also urged the elders to take advantage of the free elders’ health insurance scheme introduced by the state government to improve their well-being.
In his remarks, Prof. Joseph Oluwasanmi, President of the Ekiti Council of Elders, commended the governor’s leadership and described his administration as one guided by Solomonic wisdom and divine grace. He explained that the new book provides a detailed exposition of Yoruba socio-cultural and political values and revealed that the Yoruba Council is collaborating with the Ekiti Council to launch the book for prominent Yoruba traditional and political leaders.
The event was attended by key government officials, including Deputy Governor Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye, Secretary to the State Government Prof. Habibat Adubiaro, and Chief of Staff Mr Niyi Adebayo, among others.
