Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of deliberately dragging out ceasefire negotiations in an attempt to break down diplomacy and prolong the war.

His remarks come amid renewed international efforts to end the three-year conflict, following a high-profile meeting between US and Russian leaders.

Ukraine’s military has denied reports that its forces are surrounded in Russia’s Kursk region, rejecting claims made after former US President Donald Trump urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to spare the lives of thousands of “surrounded” Ukrainian troops.

In response, Putin stated that Russian forces would guarantee the safety of Ukrainian soldiers in Kursk, provided they surrender and lay down their arms. The statement has heightened concerns over Russia’s intentions in the ongoing conflict.

Speaking after the G7 summit in Canada, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed “cautious optimism” about a possible Ukraine ceasefire but stressed that significant challenges remain. “There is still much work to be done, but we are hopeful,” Rubio said.

Trump, who recently visited Moscow, described discussions with Putin as “good and productive,” raising speculation about the role the US might play in brokering peace between the warring nations.

Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine three years ago, igniting a war that has devastated cities, displaced millions, and drawn in global powers. As ceasefire negotiations continue, both sides remain locked in a high-stakes battle, with the future of Ukraine hanging in the balance.
