Here’s how much it’ll cost to renew your Quebec driver’s license in 2025
Nobody likes paying for their driver’s license, but at least this year’s bill from the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) won’t come with a nasty surprise.
If you’re a Quebec driver, you may be happy to hear that the government is keeping costs relatively low for those with a clean record.
While some fees have seen a slight increase, you won’t be shelling out a fortune to stay on the road in 2025.
How much you’ll pay for your Quebec driver’s license in 2025
For holders of a Class 5 (passenger vehicle) or Class 6 (motorcycle) license, the cost varies depending on the number of demerit points you have accumulated. Here’s what you can expect to pay this year:
- 0 points: $26.25 (75 cents more than last year)
- 1 to 3 points: $102.38 for a car, $80.29 for a motorcycle
- 4 to 6 points: $179.15 for a car, $129.71 for a motorcycle
- 7 to 9 points: $243.82 for a car, $195.39 for a motorcycle
- 10 to 14 points: $337.56 for a car, $233.41 for a motorcycle
- 15+ points: $574.58 for a car, $546.83 for a motorcycle
These fees include the insurance contribution (if applicable), administrative costs, and the amounts collected by the Ministry of Finance. If you need a new photo or a plasticized card, an additional $10.20 fee applies.
SAAQ extends payment deadline
Due to delays caused by the ongoing Canada Post labor dispute, the SAAQ has granted an extension for certain drivers to pay their license renewal or vehicle registration fees. If your birthday falls between December 20, 2024, and February 28, 2025, or if the last name associated with your vehicle registration starts with A, B, C, or W, you now have until March 31, 2025, to make your payment.
Higher registration fees in 2025
While your driver’s license fees might not break the bank, your car registration fees could be a different story. In several Quebec cities, vehicle owners will have to pay additional transportation fees, which can range anywhere from $30 to $180, depending on where you live.
So while you might save on your license, keep an eye on those registration costs before setting your budget for the year.
How to pay for your license in Quebec
According to the SAAQ, you have multiple options for paying your driver’s license fees. Payments can be made through your financial institution, whether online, at an ATM, at the counter, or by phone.
You can also set up one or more pre-authorized debits using their online tool to simulate the number of installments and estimate their amount. If you prefer to pay by cheque, you can mail it to:
Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec
Case postale 19300, succursale Terminus Québec (Québec) G1K 8J6
Driving without a valid licence is an offence punishable by a fine of $300 to $600, in addition to other fees.
