AFCON: Victor Osimhen's Doping Test Result Emerges

Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen has reportedly tested negative for a doping test.

Naija News reported earlier that the Napoli forward was subjected to multiple doping tests at the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire due to his efforts so far at the tournament.

Osimhen has always been known for his unlimited display of stamina, unwavering strength, and readiness to go the extra mile for his team.

The 25-year-old player has maintained this outstanding performance at the 2023 AFCON, though he has not scored as many goals as he regularly does.

Osimhen has scored just a goal and provided two assists in the Eagles’ last four AFCON games, but his overwhelming team play has caught the attention of many.

Due to the enormous energy he poured into Nigeria’s 1-0 win over Guinea-Bissau on January 22, the reigning African player of the year was reportedly subjected to multiple doping tests.

Though initial reports claimed that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) subjected him to doping tests after Nigeria’s 2-0 win over Cameroon on January 27, Naija News gathered that the tests took place after the Super Eagles’ game against Guinea-Bissau.

Reports emerging on Tuesday revealed that not only Osimhen, but two other Super Eagles players who were tested for the drug test came out negative.

The two other players tested from Jose Peseiro’s squad are forward, Ademola Lookman and captain William Troost-Ekong.

The Super Eagles are scheduled to play their quarter-final match against Angola on Friday.

Super Eagles Of Nigeria To Play Lionel Messi’s Argentina In March

Inter Miami of MLS forward, Lionel Messi will lead Argentina to face the Super Eagles of Nigeria in an international friendly in a yet-to-be-confirmed day in March 2024.

Naija News gathered that the friendly game is part of Argentina’s tour of China and they will also face the hosts of the ongoing 2023 AFCON, Ivory Coast at the same venue and month.

The Argentina Football Association (AFA) and the Chinese corporation concluded the deal on Monday, January 29 and the AFA made the announcement almost immediately.

This means that the Nigeria national team players will gather once again about a month after the 2023 AFCON. Nigeria are currently in the quarter-finals stage of the competition where they will face Angola on Friday, February 2.

Note that the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Argentina have met six times since 1994. In those meetings, Argentina recorded five wins which were in the 1994, 2002, 2010, 2014, and 2018 FIFA World Cups.

It was in the 1995 King Fahd Cup, that the Super Eagles recorded their first and only 0-0 draw with Argentina in a competitive game.

However, the Super Eagles have recorded two wins over Argentina in international friendlies, in Abuja in 2011, and Krasnodar, Russia, in 2017.

Leicester Coach Disagrees With Wilfred Ndidi Over Injury Status

Leicester City manager, Enzo Maresca has insisted that Nigerian midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi is not expected to return to competitive football anytime soon.

This assertion is contrary to the claims of Wilfred Ndidi who said that he should return to competitive football within the next two weeks.

Recall that Ndidi was one of the players Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro planned to take to the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast. The defensive midfielder was included in Super Eagles’ 25-man list but the player had to withdraw from the squad due to an injury.

Ndidi had to undergo surgery to treat the injury and has been out of football since December last year.

In a recent interview with Sky Sports, the 27-year-old midfielder said: “The injury’s alright, I’m getting there. It’s two weeks post-surgery.

“Hopefully in a couple of weeks, I’ll be back.”

When he was asked to clarify what the two weeks signify, the Nigerian midfielder said, “A couple of weeks to play.”

Ahead of Leicester City’s FA Cup fourth-round game against Birmingham which ended in an emphatic 3-0 win for coach Maresca earlier today, the manager argued that Ndidi was wrong with his projection.

The 43-year-old Italian tactician stressed that the Nigeria international will stay out of football for more than the weeks the footballer projected.

“He didn’t understand ‘a couple of weeks’, that it means two weeks. It’s not weeks”, the coach said.

“It’s as we said at the beginning, it’s three months, and nothing has changed. But he didn’t understand that couple means two, so this is why he said it.”

Note that the contract between Leicester City and Wilfred Ndidi will expire on June 30, 2024, and there is no sign of a contract extension talks at the time of writing.
