Switzerland extradited Russian businessman Vladislav Klyushin to the U.S. on Saturday, where he faces insider trading charges involving tens of millions of dollars. According to Switzerland’s Federal Office of Justice, Klyushin was handed over to American police officers in Zurich, who accompanied him on the flight.

Klyushin owns the M13 group, a Russian company that specialises in databases and IT resources, and reportedly has close ties to the Russian government.

The businessman was arrested on March 21 in the Swiss canton of Valais, on his way to a skiing holiday. The American Embassy in Bern formally requested his extradition the following month and Switzerland’s Federal Office of Justice issued an extradition decision in June.

The Swiss Federal Court dismissed Klyushin’s appeal against extradition earlier this month.

The Russian embassy in Switzerland denounced the move as part of a “hunt” of Russian citizens by U.S. authorities. “We are deeply saddened by … the hasty extradition,” said embassy press secretary Vladimir Khokhlov, according to the Russian news agency TASS.

Klyushin’s lawyer Oliver Ciric has said the U.S. bid to extradite his client is politically motivated “in connection with the nature of his work and contacts within the Russian government.”
