Edmonton police have apprehended a woman after fire crews fought several fires in a central Edmonton apartment building Saturday night, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) says.

Just before 7 p.m., fire crews responded to alarms at a residence near 112 Avenue and 86 Street, where crews arrived a couple of minutes later to find four small, independent fires had been lit throughout the building, including a kitchen cupboard in one of the suites, EFRS spokesman Rowan Anderson told Postmedia.

Four units responded to the fires, Anderson added, and extinguished them all by 7:34 p.m.

While EFRS reported no injuries from the incident, Anderson said Emergency Medical Services also responded to the scene along with police.

Edmonton Police Service spokesman Scott Pattison said patrol officers received report that a woman had been setting small fires in an assisted living residence, and responded to a call for assistance from EFRS.

Pattison said officers have taken a woman into custody, and charges are pending.
