MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The Minnesota Department of Transportation is advising no travel in the northwest part of the state as an Alberta clipper system moves over Minnesota early Friday, and some roads have now been closed.

Travel conditions are poor along Interstate 94 from Moorhead to Osakis, and Highway 10 from Moorhead to Wadena, and as of 9 a.m., MnDOT announced that both stretches were closed until further notice.

The Minnesota State Patrol said that from 5 to 11:30 a.m., there were 90 crashes statewide, along with 112 spinouts and vehicles off the road. There were nine jackknifed semis.

“Driving conditions are dangerous, multiple vehicles blocking the road. Plan accordingly. When a road is closed it is illegal to travel in that area,” MnDOT said.

Most of northern Minnesota was under a winter weather advisory until midnight. A number of counties are also under a blizzard warning until noon, including Polk, Norman, Clay, Kittson, Marshall and Wilkin.

WCCO director of meteorology Mike Augustyniak says that temperatures will fall for about the next 24 hours, reaching around 15 during the evening commute in the Twin Cities, and falling to about 5 degrees below zero by Saturday morning. The morning windchill will be near -40 up north and -20 in the Twin Cities metro area.

Augustyniak said the evening commute Friday is not going to be an easy one.

“A re-freeze is underway, and will continue in areas where road crews haven’t been able to re-treat roads since Thursday evening’s rain,” Augustyniak said.

The weekend will be pretty quiet and cold. Highs will be about 20 degrees below average. Light snow showers are likely after dark Saturday from around I-94 on south.
