They used to keep Big Ben accurate with a thrice-weekly winding marathon and the careful placement of some pre-decimalisation pennies, but these days, the big clock is linked to Boris Johnson’s so-called apologies for partygate – which seem to be as regular as the proverbial.
The most recent one happened on Tuesday.

How valuable is a wholehearted apology from a heartless man? Keir Starmer certainly wasn’t buying it, and his powerful rebuttal had both sides of the House in silence, if not a completely respectful silence.
It certainly didn’t do anything to halt the many calls for him to resign.
