Gary Lineker shared a familiar looking quote in the wake of the Lionesses’ historic 2-1 win over Germany in the finals of the European Championships.
Familiar, except different in one very important regard.
Football is a simple game. 22 women chase a ball for 90 minutes and, at the end, England actually win. Congratulations @lionesses. Fabulous.

Except it turned out it wasn’t familiar to everyone, and the number of people correcting the Match of the Day man, or simply getting the hump with him, made for an entertaining read in its own right.
Here’s just a flavour of what followed (there’s always the possibility they were in on the joke of course but, well, have a read for yourself).
1.
wasnt it 120 minutes?

2.
What kind of backhanded congrat is this. Never heard it be called simple on MoTD. But 22 women playing a simple@game@of course they’d win. Simples. Side eye for real

3.
It went to extra time and they weren’t simple they were fanbloodytastic role models for football.

Come on, they are amazing, you wouldn’t be saying it was a simple game if it was the men that had actually won

8.
If it’s that simple @GaryLineker ..maybe your analysis on MOTD could be a lot shorter!!??

9.
Come on, Mr Lineker, could you been just a little more encouraging! THEzy WERE GREAT

What’s with the sarcasm England played brilliantly, you seem pretty shocked? It’s only taken 56 years.
— Daniel James Official (@DanielJames1066) July 31, 2022
Anyway, that’s probably enough of that. And just in case anyone still didn’t get it, it’s a reference to what Lineker said after the England men’s team were knocked out of Italia ’90 in the semi-finals by Germany.
“Football is a simple game. Twenty-two men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans always win.”
Last word to @ArvindHickman.
Wow, the amount of folks getting so triggered by this comment without a clue about its context. Hint: a certain England forward said it in 1990 after losing to the……..
