Rare native rodent rediscovered near Melbourne

A rare native rodent that hasn't been seen for more than 30 years has been rediscovered at Wilsons Promontory, south-east of Melbourne.

The population of the endangered broad-toothed rat, known for its chubby cheeks, has been declining in Victoria for decades.

This is due to habitat destruction as well as predator cats and foxes.

Zoos Victoria native rodent biologist Dr Phoebe Burns said the rare rats were "really relaxed, really docile little guys".

"They're a really easy target for predators," Dr Burns said.

Researchers conducted a survey of the grassy area and found the rats' droppings.

They soon managed to trap, identify and release one of them.
