Nollywood has grown by leaps and bounds over the years. And there’s no denying that it has found its most excellent bloom yet, with Nigerian films doing rounds locally and internationally.

Highest-Grossing Nollywood Films

Over the years, some films have raised the bar so high, toppling others to become the highest-grossing Nollywood films based on their plot, delivery, casts and cinematography. 

Funke Akindele’s Battle On Buka Street, which debuted on December 16, 2022, shows promise of topping the highest-grossing chart with over N360 million in three weeks, and $61, 000 over the four-day New Year Weekend in the diaspora. The movie, which debuted in 11 Regal Cinemas, is the first-ever Indigenous Nollywood release in the United States. 

Battle on Buka Street, taken to the diaspora by FilmOne Entertainment (Nigeria), Part Two Media (USA) and Amplify Africa, is set to add 11 Regal Cinema locations for the 2nd week due to high demand. 

Ijakumo: Born Again Stripper, starring Toyin Abraham, has also been making numbers and rave reviews. The FilmOne-produced movie has raked in 136 million in 11 days and is the fourth-highest-grossing Nollywood movie of 2022. FilmOne and Regal Cinemas are set to debut Toyin Abraham’s ‘Ijakumo: Born Again Stripper’ on January 13, 2023, in the US and UK.

Although other major projects such as Shanty Town, The Trade, King of Boys and The Wait etc. are in the works, which no doubt would aim to trump the feats of earlier movies, here are the top 10 highest-grossing Nollywood films. 

Omo Ghetto: The Saga – ₦636 Million (2020)

Starring Funke Akindele, Nancy Isime and other notable stars, Omo Ghetto: The Saga revamped the Omo Ghetto trilogy, to the satisfaction of fans who have been craving Lefty’s crime-comedy drama for years. 

The Wedding Party – ₦452 Million (2016)

Directed by Kemi Adetiba and starring real-life heartthrobs Banky Wellington and Adesua Etomi, The Wedding Party set out to entertain and it sure delivered on that. 

The Wedding Party 2 – ₦433 Million (2017)

The Wedding Party 2 is not far off. The movie continued the entertaining run that its prequel started, and gave us the perfect denouement to Dozie and Deadre’s romance. 

Chief Daddy – ₦387 Million (2018)

EbonyLife film’s Chief Daddy wasn’t only laced with glitz and glam but it also featured a collection of star casts who ensured that it grossed ₦387,540,749 at the box office. 

Battle on Buka Street –  ₦361 Million (2022)

Battle on Buka Street, which debuted recently, has broken records by racking in ₦360M in less than 2 months. Funke Akindele delivered another masterclass and she sure knows her way around this movie thing. 

Brotherhood – ₦327 Million (2022)

The thrilling Brotherhood, featuring two in-demand faces in Falz and Tobi Bakre, was simply one of the best movies in 2022. No wonder its the 6th-grossing Nigerian film of all time. 

King of Thieves – ₦320 Million (2022) 

Femi Adebayo’s King of Thieves is a drama series that explores the mystical nature of the Yoruba tradition. As a result of its reminiscence of old Yoruba films where gods were phoned through invications and powers laid in little gourds, King of Thieves became a hit, doing ₦320 Million  at the box office. 

Sugar Rush – ₦287 Million (2019)

Directed by Kayode Kasum and produced by GreOH Media, Jungle Filmworks and Empire Mates Entertainment, Sugar Rush features a collage of stars including Adesua Etomi, Bisola Aiyeola and Bimbo Ademoye. 

Christmas in Miami – ₦265 Million (2021)

Directed by Robert O. Peters, Christmas in Miami is a comedy series that continues the fun adventures of Akpos. Starring comedian Ayo Makun, little surprise that it delivered many hilarious moments which make it worthy of mention on this list. 

King of Boys – ₦244 Million (2018)

King of Boys is a thriller series that blazed a trail for other Nigerian thriller films to thrive. From car chases to crunch moments, Kemi Adetiba’s King of Boys just had to be a commercial success.
