South African rapper Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes has reportedly been shot dead while hanging out with friends at a popular night spot on Durban’s Florida Road in South Africa on Friday, February 10, 2023.
According to South African News Agency News24, AKA, together with a friend, were shot while standing on the pavement when gunfire rang out shortly at around 22:00.
“I can confirm that two men were killed, and one is a well-known rapper. Police will not be releasing any names of the victims yet until a full investigation is completed”, News 24 reported.
The shooting occurred in the popular entertainment district, which was brought to a standstill after police officers closed the road. AKA was shot moments before his birthday bash at Yugo Durban, Stamfordhill Road, Durban, on Friday night.
“Urgent announcement: event has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances”, the event organiser, Yugo Durban, has since posted on their official Instagram page.
Florida, Gauteng, has long been known for its high crime rate and volatile streets, with gang activity and shootings frequently occurring in the area. According to South African Police crime statistics, Florida Police Station recorded the 8th highest number of motorcycle and motor vehicle theft in the country between April and June 2021.
The shooting has sparked outrage, with many of AKA’s fellow artistes taking to social media to mourn his loss and call for action to address the ongoing violence in Florida.
Hours before the attack, AKA and his friends had taken to their Instagram page to share videos of their activities at different parts of the town from the barbing salon – Brydgroom Florida where they had their haircut to the restaurant – Wish of Florida where he was reportedly shot. The restaurant did not respond to calls from Netng.
As at the time of publishing this report, the Florida and Durban Police are yet to respond to emails from Netng. Calls to the Florida Police were also not answered.
AKA’s death has also sparked debates about attack on celebrities after sharing their live location on the internet.
In September 2022, American rapper Nicki Minaj condemned the sharing of live locations on the internet after a fellow American rapper, Rakim Hasheem Allen also known as PnB Rock, was shot dead in Los Angeles on Monday, September 12, 2022.
Before the attack, PnB Rock’s girlfriend Stephanie Sibounheuang reportedly posted on her Instagram Stories and deleted videos showing that they were eating at a restaurant. Another rising rapper Pop Smoke was murdered at his home in February 2020, a few hours after a series of Instagram posts revealing his home address.
“After Pop Smoke there’s no way we as rappers or our loved ones are still posting locations to our whereabouts. To show waffles & some fried chicken????! He was such a pleasure to work with. Condolences to his mom & family. This makes me feel so sick. Jesus. #SIP #PnbRock,” Nicki Minaj tweeted.
