Currently, it’s -12.3 C at the Edmonton Blatchford weather station with 11 km/h winds from the north, northwest contributing to a -18 wind chill.

Hello, March. We meet again. You and I aren’t on the best of terms are we, March? In the past, I’ve said some things. Like how March is undeniably the worst month of the year, or more plainly speaking, that March just sucks.

Well, I’m back now to double down on those previous statements to declare — as Bobby Boucher’s dear momma would say — March is the DEVIL.

Just the worst. Always the worst. Never fails to be the worst. Anyway, it was like 5C the other day and all the snow was melting but that’s all gone and turned into ice now because March had to show up and make everything suck again. Forecasters are calling for a slight chance of snow over the weekend and temperatures hovering in the mid-teens. The wind, however, is expected to be particularly biting as forecasters predict wind chill levels below -20 over the next few days.

All of this is to say, Lisa, you need to wear a coat and mittens. It’s gonna be a chilly one, and you know exactly who’s to blame for that…

Cold Streets

The City of Edmonton announced Friday that it would activate its extreme weather response over the weekend in anticipation of a sudden drop in temperatures.

The city will co-ordinate with 25 social service agencies to open additional shelter and warmings spaces during the cold spell, according to the bulletin, a policy adopted in 2019 which implements the response whenever three consecutive nights with -20 C windchills are in the forecast.

The response will begin Saturday at 9 a.m. and continue through Sunday morning, unless the weather warms or cold temperatures persist.
