Wayne Rooney, the new manager of EFL Championship side, Birmingham City, is aiming to bring the club back to the Premier League.
Naija News reported Wayne Rooney signed a three-and-a-half-year managerial contract with Birmingham City on Wednesday, October 11.
Rooney replaced John Eustace who was sacked on Monday due to a poor run of games which has left the club in the 6th place on the second-tier league table.
The former Manchester United and England striker, who left DC United on Sunday by mutual consent after his team missed the MLS Cup play-offs, is expected to do better than his predecessor.
In his first press conference as Birmingham City manager, Rooney said that the club’s top priority is getting back into the Premier League after a 12-year absence.
“The goal for the club and myself is to get this club back to the Premier League,” Rooney said.
“There is a lot of work to be done throughout the football club but the Premier League is where we want to get to.
“It’s an ambition of mine and it is an ambition of the club’s, and we are putting everything in place to make sure we do that shortly.”
When asked about taking over a club in a good position, Rooney said: “It’s more pressure as well, which I love. I love the fact we are in a good position. I love the challenge and I love the pressure of it, and that’s something I’ve dealt with since I was a young kid coming through at 16.
“It’s nothing new to me, but it might be new to some of the players.
“My job is to make sure I get them ready for that and really get them ready to go out and be successful.
“We do have tough games coming up which I can’t wait to go into, and I can’t wait to get the team out on the training pitch, get them working on how I want them to play, but also get the mentality and the mindset right to really be consistent in this league.
“It’s so important to be consistent in the Championship and I’ll do everything I can to make sure we do that.”
