Parts of the Gold Coast and areas in northern New South Wales face a flash flooding risk from heavy rainfall that has lashed south-east Queensland.

Dozens of people have been rescued in the past 24 hours, and the ADF are on standby to help if needed.

It's feared thousands in the region could be without power for up to 10 days.

Burnett, Wide Bay, Brisbane and the Gold Coast hinterland have all been issued severe weather warnings by the Bureau of Meteorology.

Springbrook was hit with rainfall as high as 500mm in the 24 hours to 9pm last night, and that weather is expected to stick around this morning.

Heavy and widespread rainfall is forecast to continue from Gympie to the NSW border today, leaving authorities fearing "life-threatening flash flooding".

Some areas are expected to cop another 100 to 200 millimetres in as little as three hours, with daily totals possibly topping 350 millimetres and localised "intense" rainfall.

The Gold Coast hinterland copped the brunt of the falls yesterday with more than 240 millimetres falling from 9am at Wongawallan and Cedar Creek, 208 millimetres at North Tamborine and 155 millimetres at Mount Tamborine.

The Bureau of Meteorology warned the storms were "hit-and-miss" – making them harder to predict – but expected the heavy rainfall to move generally northward today.

A severe weather warning remained current for the whole south-east coast this morning, along with flood watches for most of the region's major rivers.

Further south, the NSW State Emergency Service responded to more than 115 incidents in the past 24 hours, in response to the impacts of storms and flooding in the north east of the state.
