The driver of a pickup truck was killed early Saturday in a highway crash south of Grande Prairie, RCMP say.

The victim was a 57-year-old man driving a Chevrolet Silverado. In a Saturday news release, RCMP said the Silverado was moving southbound on Highway 40 just after 7 a.m. near the Canfor Haul Road, where a Dodge Dakota travelling northbound crossed the centre line.

The two pickups collided, after which the Silverado went into the west side ditch and struck a Ford F-550 that had pulled over to try to avoid the collision, the release said.

The driver of the Silverado, who was the only occupant, was declared dead at the scene.

The drivers of the other trucks suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.

An RCMP collision analyst was on scene to investigate and that section of highway was closed for several hours. RCMP sent out a second release at 5:15 p.m. to say normal traffic flow had resumed.
