The attack, which has been largely described as a massacre, was said to be in response to the killing of 12 policemen and an ambush of soldiers by a militia that used the civilian population of Odi as its cover. Nigeria’s president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his official reaction to the killings of the 16 soldiers warned that any attack on the armed forces or any of their men would be considered an attack on the nation.
