Urban areas and developing suburbs were among the locations that recorded a population boom in Victoria.

Rockbank and Mount Cottrell, about 28km from the CBD welcomed 4,300 people residents.

Nearby suburb Fraser Rise and Mickleham, in the state's north both saw a jump of 3,400 residents.

Further towards the city, and Clayton North along with Notting Hill were among the highest growth rates, up 19 per cent.

Melbourne currently has about 100,000 fewer residents than Sydney, but social researcher and demographer Mark McCrindle previously told 9News he was confident Melbourne "will take the crown in a few years".

It was a similar trend seen in New South Wales, with the largest growth occurring in Sydney's outer west.

Greater Sydney increased by 2.8 per cent, while the state experienced a 1 per cent rise.

Marsden Park – Shanes Park and Box Hill – Nelson, both about 49km from Sydney welcomed 3,900 people each.

Although every capital city experienced net overseas migration gain, the largest was recorded in Sydney followed by Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.

Brisbane and Perth were the only capitals to have net internal migration gains.
