Chelsea Football Club has initiated disciplinary proceedings against midfielder Enzo Fernandez following his posting of a video on social media that the French Football Federation (FFF) described as containing a “racist and discriminatory” chant.
The FFF announced on Tuesday that it intends to file a formal complaint with FIFA regarding the video, which features members of the Argentina squad singing a song directed at France’s black players.
Fernandez’s teammate at Chelsea, Wesley Fofana, who has represented France internationally, shared an image of the video on Instagram, condemning it as “blatant racism.”
Enzo Fernandez, who became Chelsea’s £107 million British record signing in February 2023, expressed regret over the video he posted during Argentina’s celebrations following their Copa America victory.
FIFA has launched its own investigation into the matter, focusing on a song sung by several Argentina players that originated from Argentine fans questioning the ancestry of France’s black and mixed-race players.
Chelsea’s first-team squad includes seven French players of black or mixed-race heritage: Wesley Fofana, Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile, Lesley Ugochukwu, Christopher Nkunku, Malo Gusto, and Malang Sarr.
In response to the incident, Fernandez stated, “The lyrics of the song are deeply offensive, and there is no justification for using such language. I am firmly against all forms of discrimination and apologize for my participation in the Copa America celebrations.”
Chelsea issued a statement acknowledging Fernandez’s public apology and announced internal disciplinary measures.
The FFF plans to communicate directly with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) regarding Fernandez’s social media video after Argentina defeated Colombia 1-0 in the Copa America final on Sunday.
In an external statement, FFF President Philippe Diallo condemned the “unacceptable and discriminatory remarks made against the players of the French team,” declaring them contrary to the principles of sport and human rights. He confirmed the FFF’s decision to file a legal complaint with FIFA over the racially offensive comments.
The Argentine Football Association has not yet responded to requests for comment.
The incident has historical context, with France having defeated Argentina in the Round of 16 at the 2018 World Cup, while Argentina triumphed over France in the 2022 World Cup final.
FIFA acknowledged the existence of the circulating video on social media and confirmed that an investigation is underway, emphasizing its strong condemnation of all forms of discrimination, including those involving players, fans, and officials.
Chelsea Football Club reiterated its stance against discriminatory behavior, describing itself as a diverse and inclusive organization that welcomes individuals from all cultures, communities, and identities.
<p>"...we also have people who are intelligent, energetic, hardworking, who provide the human capital that investors need to drive their businesses.”</p>
