Former AFL player has charges upgraded over deadly crash

A former AFL player has had his charges upgraded after a crash that killed two women in Western Australia's Wheatbelt region.

Shannon Cox was originally charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death.

However, when the former Collingwood player faced Geraldton Court today those charges were upgraded to manslaughter.

The 38-year-old was allegedly behind the wheel of a Toyota Prado last month when it collided with a road train towing two trailers and a Suzuki hatchback on Brand Highway near Cataby.

Coral Senior and Thelma Clausen, the two women inside the Suzuki, both died in the crash.

It's understood the charges were upgraded as a result of blood tests.

Cox did not enter a plea today and the matter was adjourned for legal advice.

His bail has been extended with further conditions added. 

Cox will reappear in Perth court on July 24.
