In a significant political development, former President Barack Obama, along with former First Lady Michelle Obama, has publicly endorsed Kamala Harris for the upcoming 2024 US Presidential election.
In a post on the X social media platform, formerly known as Twitter, on Friday, Obama stated, “Earlier this week, Michelle and I called our friend Kamala Harris. We told her that she’ll make a fantastic President of the United States, and that she has our full support. At this critical moment for our country, we’re going to do everything we can to make sure she wins in November. We hope you’ll join us.”
This endorsement comes after President Joe Biden’s unexpected withdrawal from the race, citing personal reasons and endorsing Harris as his successor. Harris, the current Vice President, has quickly assumed the mantle of the Democratic Party’s presumptive nominee, with the Democratic National Committee rebranding the campaign from “Biden for President” to “Harris for President”
Harris’s campaign has gained significant momentum, with a record-breaking $81 million raised in the first 24 hours following Biden’s endorsement. Her campaign promises to focus on key issues such as climate change, abortion rights, and economic justice, aligning closely with progressive elements within the party.
This move by Obama, one of the most influential figures in the Democratic Party, is seen as a decisive moment in the campaign, potentially solidifying Harris’s position as the leader capable of taking on Trump in the general election.
