Lagos, Nigeria, Wednesday, July 31, 2024 – The organisers of Nigerian Entertainment Conference (NECLive) mourn the loss of veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter, actress and broadcaster Onyeka Onwenu.

Onwenu’s illustrious career spanned over four decades, during which she captivated audiences with her soulful voice and passionate performances. Often referred to as the “Elegant Stallion,” she was celebrated for her contributions to the Nigerian music industry and a stellar career in Nollywood.

Beyond her artistic achievements, Onwenu was a tireless advocate for women’s rights and social justice, using her platform to champion various humanitarian causes. Her legacy of grace, talent, and unwavering commitment to positive change will continue to inspire generations to come.

Regional Manager for BHM’s West Africa operations (organisers of NECLive), Iretomiwa Akintunde-Johnson commented: “Onyeka Onwenu was a Nigerian entertainment and media icon. Her voice, talent, and vigour have inspired millions across the world and will continue to do so for decades to come. She will be missed.”

Onwenu has been recognized for her contributions to Nigerian society, including being awarded the National Honors of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011. 

While we mourn her passing and commiserate with her family on this great loss, we will continue to celebrate her remarkable life and the impact her vision left us with.
