A drive-thru coffee shop is to be built on the car park of Leyland’s Morrisons store – but will not be allowed to operate 24 hours a day.
Planning permission has been approved for a proposal which will see the development built on an “underused” area of the car park.
Applicant Motor Fuel Group, which has the same ownership as Morrisons, has not disclosed which chain will be running the new shop but its other sites generally have either Costa Coffee or Starbucks. Its application says it will be “a strong enough brand that it can operate independently of the superstore”.

As well as the drive-thru lane, the shop will offer seating inside and seven tables outside. The plan also includes the installation of electric vehicle chargers in the car park.
The applicant had hoped to open 24 hours a day, seven days a week but this sparked concerns over potential anti-social behaviour and disturbance to neighbours. Instead, the planning permission comes with a condition it can only open 6am-10pm Monday to Saturday and 8am-10pm Sundays and Bank Holidays.
