A group at Cardinal Newman College spent a night under the stars to raise £2,520 for homelessness charity Shelter, sparking discussions on housing rights.

The charity is currently campaigning for more social housing and the Renters’ Rights Bill in England, which will abolish Section 21 ‘no fault evictions’.

The law aiming to reform the private rented sector is expected to come into effect between late 2025 or early 2026.

Organised by the college’s Newman Against Poverty group and the Equality and Diversity Team, the ‘Big Sleep Out’ exceeded its target of matching the £1,700 raised last year.

With the support of Shelter, 20 students and six staff arrived at 7.30pm, sleeping bags in hand, to spend a chilly night in the college grounds.

A representative from Shelter joined the group to talk about the work that the charity does, and how the funds raised would be spent in supporting local homeless people.

They talked about housing rights and the issues within the current law, which the charity are campaigning against.

Students then took part in a range of activities, relating to the current pressures of affording to run a household, with the current cost of living crisis in mind.

Despite low temperatures, the group successfully spent a night under the stars in the college grounds.

The students found the experience to be important in learning about the plight of many people across the country.
