Two people have died and another two remain missing in the South Korean resort town of Gapyeong following a landslide and severe flooding on Sunday.

The incident occurred during a period of heavy rainfall that engulfed houses and swept away vehicles.

This raises the nationwide death toll to 14, with 12 people still unaccounted for since the rains began on Wednesday.

The government weather forecaster said on Sunday that the heavy rainfall, which earlier affected southern parts of the country, had moved north overnight and was expected to cease later in the day. A heat wave is forecast to follow the wet spell.

Authorities continue rescue operations as communities cope with the aftermath of the extreme weather.
