Farington Park in Leyland has been announced as a recipient of the Green Flag Award by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy.

The Green Flag Award is the benchmark international quality classification for parks and green spaces, providing the high standards against which sites are measured.

Land managers, local authorities and volunteers pledge to achieve this high standard when applying for the award.

Cllr Wesley Roberts, cabinet member for finance and assets said, “It is an incredible achievement for another of our beautiful parks to be awarded Green Flag status.

“The Green Flag is a symbol of excellence and a marker which demonstrates how well the park is managed, maintained, and enjoyed by communities.

“I want to thank everyone, council staff, the Friends of Farington Park, our brilliant volunteer group, and those who enjoy the park on a regular basis for all they do to make sure the park continues to thrive.

“I’m so proud that South Ribble has now five parks which are recognised nationally, and for having the only park outside of London to retain the status since 1997, is a real testament to the open spaces we have in the borough.”

The urban Farington park boasts a modern play area and ball court, meadow areas and wooded areas with both mature and newly planted trees.

Further improvements are set to continue this year with new signage and landscaping works to the old mill pond.
