President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in Rio de Janeiro to attend the 17th BRICS Summit of Heads of State and Government, where Nigeria is participating as a partner nation.
On arrival at Galeao Air Force Base, he was received by Brazil’s Deputy Ministers for Africa and Trade Promotion, and accorded a Guard of Honour by the Brazilian military.
Tinubu is in Brazil at the invitation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and will attend a bilateral meeting with the Brazilian leader ahead of the main sessions on July 6 and 7.
At the summit, the president is expected to speak on Nigeria’s economic reforms, pitch investment opportunities in agriculture, solid minerals, health care, and alternative energy, and engage in deliberations on inclusive governance, artificial intelligence, climate change, and health.
Ahead of his arrival, BRICS political negotiators held talks focused on AI regulation, climate finance, and structural challenges confronting the Global South.
President Tinubu is accompanied by state governors from Benue, Ogun, Lagos, Delta, and Niger, as well as key ministers.
His arrival in Brazil follows a week long state visit to Saint Lucia, where Nigeria formalised diplomatic ties, proposed reciprocal visa waivers for OECS officials, announced scholarships, and received the nation’s highest honour.
