With just weeks to go until the Emmys, Adam Scott stands a pretty good shot at his first win, either for his leading performance in – or his work as a producer on – Severance.

But during a recent interview on his former Parks And Recreation co-star Amy Poehler’s podcast Good Hang, Adam admitted that there was a moment he almost quit acting early on in his career, after losing out on a crucial role.

During the conversation, the Good Place star explained that in the early 2000s, he and Michael C Hall were both in the running for the role of David Fisher in the hit drama Six Feet Under.

Ultimately, the part would end up going to Michael, with the disappointment almost leading Adam to walk away from acting altogether.

[That rejection] was the one where I was like, ‘I might stop doing this. I think that it’s time for me to read the tea leaves and walk away’,” he admitted.

“Yeah, that was a blow. That was hard. But it’s also important that you have those experiences.”

Adam went on to say that it was “good that I didn’t get it”, as he wouldn’t have been “nearly as good” as Michael in the role, for which he and his colleagues earned two Screen Actors Guild Awards.

“[Michael] was perfect and incredible. And I wasn’t ready,” Adam concluded.

In fact, Michael and Adam ended up briefly sharing the screen in Six Feet Under when the latter was cast in a two-episode arc as a new love interest for David Fisher.

Earlier this year, Adam once again took centre stage in the much-hyped second season of Severance, with the show leading the way at the upcoming Emmys with a hefty 27 nominations, including acting nods for himself and co-stars Britt Lower, Zach Cherry, John Turturro, Tramell Tillman and Patricia Arquette.

A third season has already been confirmed by Apple TV+, but is yet to enter production.
