Demolition works on the former St Joseph’s Orphanage in Mount Street have quickened in the past week.

Major works are being undertaken to bring down the fire-ravaged and asbestos-riddled buildings which border Mount Street.

New pictures show the scale of the demolition works which have been on and off since being granted the go-ahead in March but were paused due to health and safety investigations.

Developers Zimrock say they are hopeful the demolition works along the Mount Street side will be completed next week meaning a re-opening of the road could be imminent. They added any decision on re-opening the road is for Preston City Council and Lancashire County Council to make.

Mount Street has remained closed since early November when a major fire ripped through large parts of the building.

The Fishergate bus lane has been suspended since the fire took place and the road closure applied.

The demolition works will leave the grade-II listed chapel and tower in place at the former orphanage and hospital – with a now lapsed planning application for townhouses and apartments to be built around it.

Pictures and video taken by city photographer Sonia Bashir show the latest from the demolition site, you can watch her clip below or on YouTube.

And these pictures give an aerial view of the work progressing.
