More than 1,800 children across South Ribble have received free items of school uniform thanks to a pop-up shop run by the local council.

In total, 464 families from across the borough used the free school uniform shop and collectively saved an estimated £400,000 as a result.

The pop-up shop ran from August 3-7 and offered free school uniform for all schools across South Ribble made up from donations from across the community. It also saw representatives from the council’s social prescribing team on hand along with community partners to offer additional support to families who may be facing challenges.

Councillor Aniela Bylinski Gelder, deputy leader of South Ribble Borough Council said, “We are so proud that as a council we can co-ordinate projects such as this which supports families, helps children and saves people money.

“Once again, our school uniform pop-up shop has been supported by hundreds of people across the community through donations and I can’t thank all those people enough.

“In just five days we have saved families in South Ribble hundreds of thousands of pounds, but it’s much more than that. We’ve demonstrated what can happen when a community comes together to support each other and our additional support teams have been able to provide even more support to those families and individuals who need it.”

A year-round uniform support service has also been set up through which those in need of school uniform provision can contact the council through their Household Support Fund team to get support.

The service links families and individuals with support across the borough and can also help with finances, mental health and loneliness concerns, housing and much more. More information is available here.
