Volunteer police officers were bombarded by up to 25 fireworks in an incident on the Callon estate in Preston.

Special officers from Lancashire Constabulary were responding to reports that people and their properties were being targeted by the fireworks, shot by youths, on Waldon Street at around 7.40pm on Friday (10 October).

In response, around 25 fireworks were aimed at the police vehicle and the officers. Police said that those involved have been identified and spoken with.

Police said that youths had been aiming fireworks at members of the public, one of whom was reported to have carried out the assault in response.

The person was spoken to and given ‘strong words of advice’ not to take the law into their own hands and to report antisocial behaviour, police said.

A spokesperson for police said: “We know that incidents involving fireworks cause alarm and distress. Anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated, and we will take action to keep communities safe.

“We will deploy high-visibility additional patrols to areas where such behaviour is reported as Bonfire Night approaches. Please report anti-social and criminal behaviour.”
