Murder accused Muzi Sibiya has distanced himself from the contract killing of soccer star, Senzo Meyiwa, allegedly ordered by the footballer’s then girlfriend and singer, Kelly Khumalo.
Meyiwa was shot at Khumalo’s parental home in Vosloorus, Gauteng, in 2014. He died later in hospital.
Five men are on trial in the Pretoria High Court for his murder.
During Sibiya’s cross-examination, State Prosecutor George Baloyi went through a confession statement allegedly made by Sibiya, following his arrest in May 2020.
State Prosecutor, George Baloyi, read out Sibiya’s alleged confession, wherein it says Kelly Khumalo hired hitmen to assassinate Meyiwa, the father of one of her children. According to the statement, the Buthelezi brothers, Marco and Makhimba, who are not among the five accused, carried out the hit with Sibiya. However, Sibiya denies knowing about the statement taken at the Diepkloof police station following his arrest in May 2020. He also denies being contracted to kill Meyiwa.
“I don’t know anything that has been written here,” says Sibiya.
“Marco said to me there’s a job we need to do. I asked them what job and Marco said they were hired by Kelly to kill Senzo. And as a suspect, which Kelly and which Senzo the suspect said Kelly Kumalo and Senzo Meyiwa. They are the people we are talking about, adds Baloyi.
“There was never a stage where I met Marco and Makhimba. There was never a time when I spoke to them about Kelly and Senzo. I know nothing about the death of Senzo. I know nothing about Kelly,” says Sibiya.
Sunday marks 11 years since soccer star #SenzoMeyiwa was killed. The circumstances surrounding his murder are still being ventilated inside court.
Cross examination of accused number 1, Muzi Sibiya continues this morning.

Advocate Baloyi read out an extract alleging they were paid R100 000 to carry out the hit on Meyiwa.
“Paragraph three: I asked them if they had already charged the money, and they said yes. They charged R100 000. Both Marco and Makhimba charged for the killing,” said Baloyi.
“I said I never spoke to Marco; I never spoke to Makhimba. I never received anything about a person’s death, and I said that I know nothing about his death, that there is nothing that I ever received for his death,” says Sibiya.
Baloyi says the statement further mentions help being sought from a traditional healer named Mkhulu for protection before the hit. It also mentions that Khumalo allegedly wanted money from Meyiwa.
“We want to check if we are going to succeed in doing this job. He further mentioned to Mkhulu that we are going to succeed in doing this job. He further mentions Mkhulu that we are going to kill Senzo Meyiwa, and we were bought or hired by Kelly Khumalo, who was a girlfriend to Senzo. Marco told us that Kelly wants money from Senzo, but he never told Mkhulu. He said we are going to succeed in killing the said person and he also gave us protection “medicine” and belts to put on our arms or at our waist and which were going to make us succeed in killing him,” Baloyi explains.
“I still maintain that I know nothing about this. I say that Mbotho and Gininda would know about this,” said Sibiya.
On Sunday, it will be exactly 11 years since Meyiwa’s death. Sibiya is expected back on the stand on Monday morning.
