Hundreds of members of the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) are calling for the Gauteng health department to take accountability, following the release of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) report on corruption at Tembisa Hospital.
On Monday, SIU revealed that R2 billion was syphoned from the facility in irregular contracts.
The Union has staged a march to deliver a memorandum of demands to the Gauteng Health MEC, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko.
This action comes against the background of excessive challenges in the health sector, including maladministration and corruption leading to dilapidated infrastructures.
NEHAWU’s Provincial secretary Mzikayise Tshontshi says communities are deprived of good Healthcare due to corruption.
“It is very worrying that such resources that are supposed to serve the community can be syphoned in that nature. And as NEHAWU, we condemned that thing in the strongest possible terms. And we demand immediate action. That’s one of the reasons we are here. Because we think that the Department of Health must account for what happened there. The department must make sure that anyone that is responsible for what happened in Tembisa must be brought to book.”
