A 103-year-old war veteran has recently had a hospital admission for sepsis – but managed to get home within three days.

Cyril Leeke has previously had sepsis and required IV antibiotic for 6 months when he was 100 years old but due to quick treatment, he pulled through quickly this time.

Cyril’s granddaughter, Helen Frost, praised the help he received during his time in hospital, she said: “The care he received at Royal Preston Hospital (Lancashire Teaching Hospital) was outstanding. He was treated quickly, kindly and with so much respect. The treatment they gave resolved his infection and they managed to get him home within three days.”

Cyril currently lives in Bethany House in Preston, which Helen mentioned is a wonderful care home where he is very happy.

Helen said: “His outlook on life is so refreshing and even though he was in hospital he was so grateful to have a roof over him and food to eat and a bed to sleep in.”

This positive attitude stems from a life well-lived. Cyril served in the RAF during the war in India and later became the first biology teacher at the boys’ school he attended in Reading.

He was a true pioneer and lover of nature, owning an aviary with birds and owls in his garden, and earning the reputation of being Reading’s first and most avid recycler, long before recycling became mainstream.

Today, he continues to live in the moment, always ready to crack a joke. His favourite pastimes include conquering crosswords every day and playing his piano accordion, confirming his spirit is as strong as ever as he approaches his 104th birthday in a few days’ time.
