Preston gathered around the Flag Market to show respect for soldiers who risked their lives for the country.

The service began with a welcome from Colonel David Waters, followed by the Last Post and the two minute silence.

Councillor Mel Close, the Armed Forces Champion on the city’s Labour-run authority, was in attendance alongside the Mayor Sue Whittam and city MP Mark Hendrick.

Cllr Close said: “It was a real ‘Proud Preston’ day, we had more veterans than usual attending, including at least two WWII veterans.

“There was a fantastic turnout from people watching – the rain showers didn’t stop people coming out or dampen their spirits, really good support.”

“The Standard bearers, military personnel and bugler were all brilliant as were the cadets, so many young people from Preston who we should be really proud of.

“Everyone involved put their heart, soul and a lot of time and energy into today’s service – and most gave their time for free.

“I’m always proud to be Armed Forces Champion, but I am especially proud over these few days.”

Reverend Father David Craven led a prayer to the community before a hymn was collectively sung.

Preston councillors and dignatries viewed the service from the newly reopened Harris Museum balcony as wreaths were laid for Remembrance.

The groups of veterans, armed forces personnel and civic and political dignitaries concluded the service by leaving the market square to continue their parade around the city centre.

As Tuesday (11 November) marks Armistice Day, the Flag Market’s Cenotaph will see a short service at 10.45am to commemorate the event.
