Royal Preston Hospital is one of only six places in the country to offer an innovation treatment for bladder cancer.
The technique – known as bladder carbogen and nicotinamide radiotherapy – is designed to assist patients who are not able to undertake chemotherapy.
Retired teacher and mother-of-two Jane Binney was the first person to have the new treatment following the discovery of a tumour in October last year. She undertook four weeks of the radiotherapy.

She said: ‘“I have now completed my BCON radiotherapy, which included treatment sessions on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve.
“I feel everyone involved has worked their hardest to help me.”
Funding for the new treatment has come via the Rosemere Cancer Foundation – the charitable organisation which works closely with the hospital’s cancer treatment centre.
A therapeutic radiographer, Terry Laing, was a key part of securing the funding needed for masks, oxygen monitors, cylinders and other equipment to enable the new treatment.
He said: “We’re expecting approximately 22 patients a year to undergo BCON radiotherapy
“We’re very grateful to Rosemere Cancer Foundation and its supporters for helping us with set up costs.”
Sue Swire, fundraising manager for Rosemere Cancer Foundation, said: “We’re delighted to have been able to end 2025 and start 2026 supporting the launch of BCON radiotherapy at Rosemere Cancer Centre. It’s such a positive project to get behind. We wish Jane all the best for her continuing recovery.”
