Each Sunday women from across Bamber Bridge meet in a group set up to combat women’s loneliness and social isolation.
The Bamber Bridge Women’s Shed was set up by Emma Stevens, who is the Labour councillor for Bamber Bridge East ward.
The group officially launched on 4 January with trials running in October 2025, the group nominated a chair, secretary and treasurer days before their first meeting.

The idea stemmed when councillor Emma Stevens proposed a small amount of funding for the room hire for the October trials.
Cllr Stevens said: “I have proven through the Women’s Shed that there is a need in our society for often socially isolated women to have a safe and non-male-dominated space to meet in that does not consist of a specific activity, allowing creativity and empowerment to bloom amongst members.
“Members are now set to meet every Sunday with a speaker from various organisations to attend once a month.”
With a virtual Women’s Shed meeting set to happen this month, it will invite those unable to leave their residence to have the chance to interact with other women and feel valued in the group.

A member of the Women’s Shed said: “By the time we met at the second meeting, it felt like old friends meeting up. We have a varied diary of events now to suit everyone, from speakers explaining the history of the battle of Brig to a personal trainer talking about movement and exercise.
“We have a thriving WhatsApp group to support us in between meetings, and we have very quickly become a family.”
