Northumberland Freemasons have awarded a £1,060 donation to Blyth Valley Samba, a well‑established community drumming group, to help provide new polo shirts for its volunteers.
The funding was granted through the Richard Henry Holmes Benevolent Fund, which offers support to small community organisations across Northumberland, Newcastle and North Tyneside.
Blyth Valley Samba has been part of the local community since 1993. The group was founded by musician Keith Blackburn, who brought samba drumming to Blyth after being inspired by similar groups elsewhere. Over the years, the group has become a welcoming space for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together through music.
During the Covid-19 lockdowns, sessions moved online, with Keith continuing to lead drumming via Zoom from his home, using an electronic drum kit. Sadly, Keith passed away before the group was able to reunite in person. After a period of inactivity, a small number of members came together to revive the group, which has since grown again.
Today, Blyth Valley Samba has around 25 members ranging in age from 12 to 85. The group rehearses weekly in Blyth and performs at community centres, local events and support groups across the area. While not a registered charity, the group regularly plays for community organisations, often receiving small contributions to cover transport costs.
Members say samba drumming brings significant wellbeing benefits, helping to lift mood, reduce stress and build confidence. Newcomers are always welcome and are supported by experienced players as they learn basic rhythms and techniques.

“We are proud to support small organisations through the Richard Henry Holmes Benevolent Fund. When the trustees read Blyth Valley Samba’s application, it was fully supported straight away. The group touches people right across the community, and funding like this helps volunteers continue the valuable work they do.”
The £1,060 donation has been used to provide new polo shirts for volunteers, helping to give the group a strong identity when performing and representing Blyth Valley Samba at events.
Applications for grants are open to any community or charitable organisation in need of support, provided they can outline their project’s purpose, funding needs, and charitable status. The Richard Henry Holmes Masonic Benevolent Fund donates around £160,000 annually to local causes across Northumberland, Newcastle, and North Tyneside. From food banks to youth development projects, the Freemasons’ contributions help strengthen communities throughout the region.
