The driver of the car is suspected to have been driving in an anti-social manner and hit the 14-year-old boy who was a pedestrian.

Police say they were called by the North West Ambulance Service at 9.50pm on Friday 30 January.

Chief inspector John Jennings-Wharton who is in charge of the road policing unit released a carefully worded statement on social media about the incident.

He said: “While I won’t be releasing any details which identify the child, I want to make it clear that I post the below with the full knowledge and consent of the boy’s parents.

“Now we all know that car meet events can be a fun, social gatherings for those interested in cars. And that the vast majority of those attending behave in a completely safe and legal way.

“However, like in most things, there are some who decide to let the side down.

“It is believed that this occurred as part of a car meet event and that the vehicle involved is suspected to have been involved in antisocial driving.

“In relation to last night’s [Friday] incident, the teenage boy suffered a fractured skull and the suspected driver is being investigated for serious driving offences.

“Whilst I would want not discourage anyone from attending car meets, please remember to respect the rules of the road and not put others at risk.

“I want to be clear. Anti-social driving, racing, or causing danger to other road users on public roads will not be tolerated. We will seek to prosecute the minority of drivers who are racing or driving anti-socially who in turn cause dismay for other road users and the wider communities who live close to these events.”
