ActionSA has raised concerns following the alleged disconnection of electricity at five schools in and around Eldorado Park.
The party says the schools had their electricity cut on Friday due to outstanding arrears.
The affected schools include Kliptown Primary, Heerengracht Primary, Boekenhout Primary, Eldorado Park Secondary, and Eldomaine High School.
ActionSA says the accounts were handed back to the schools by the Department of Education in April last year. However, the schools later discovered that payments to service providers had not been made.
ActionSA Member of Parliament, Dereleen James has called on the Minister of Basic Education to urgently intervene.
“South Africa cannot continue to neglect its youth, treating education as its after thought rather than a national priority. ActionSA calls for immediate intervention of the Minister to restore electricity to the affected schools and resolve administrative failures that led to this crisis. We further remind government of the court secured by ActionSA prohibiting loadshedding at schools. Schools must be protected and guaranteed access to basic services.”
